Question: How does the TFS promotion model work?

- J.D. Meier, Jason Taylor, Alex Mackman, Prashant Bansode

A promotion model is the means by which a change is propagated from one branch to another. Visual SourceSafe also allowed branching and merging, but in practice customers used pinning and sharing as a crude promotion model. Team Foundation Server Version Control uses branching and merging to support promotion modeling. You can use multiple branches to isolate specific versions of the application on which you are working. You can propagate a change by merging from files in one branch to the files in another branch.
